Drone Photography Calgary
Transport Canada Advanced RPAS certified aerial photography capturing Calgary's most spectacular perspectives — the serpentine Bow River winding through downtown, the dramatic foothills giving way to the Rockies, and the city's grid spreading across the prairie horizon.
Calgary's Aerial Perspective — Certified, Insured, Spectacular
Calgary sits at a geographic crossroads unlike any other Canadian city — at the precise point where the open prairie meets the dramatic eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. From altitude, this gives Calgary's aerial photography an extraordinary visual context: to the west, the sharp peaks of the Rockies define the horizon; below, the Bow River curves through the downtown core's gleaming towers; to the east, the Alberta prairie stretches endlessly. No other major Canadian city offers this combination of urban sophistication and wilderness grandeur visible in a single aerial frame.
BOMCAS Media's drone photography team holds Transport Canada's Advanced RPAS Certificate, authorizing operations in Calgary's controlled airspace zones with proper NAVCAN coordination, within built-up areas, and over people — capabilities that unlicensed operators cannot legally provide. We are fully insured for commercial drone operations and maintain current regulatory compliance for all Calgary drone operations.
Our primary drone platform is the DJI Mavic 3 Pro with Hasselblad camera, featuring a 4/3" CMOS sensor that captures significantly more light and detail than smaller consumer drones. The result is aerial photography that can be printed at large scale, crops cleanly for multiple aspect ratios, and holds quality in challenging light conditions — overcast winter skies, bright midday sun, and the golden hour light that makes Calgary's foothills glow.
Calgary Drone Photography Applications
Real Estate Aerial Photography
Aerial photography is the single most impactful upgrade for Calgary real estate listings, particularly for properties where context, lot size, and view corridors are selling features. A Springbank Hill estate's mountain panorama, a Mahogany lake community home's proximity to the lake, a Beltline penthouse's skyline view, a Rocky View County acreage's property boundaries and surrounding landscape — all of these sell the property in a way that ground-level photography simply cannot.
We coordinate our drone flights to capture the most compelling angle for each property, factoring in sun position (east-facing morning light, west-facing evening light), surrounding neighbourhood context, and the specific views buyers will value. For luxury properties, we offer both bright-sky daytime aerials and blue-hour twilight aerial sequences.
Construction Progress & Development Documentation
Calgary's extensive residential and commercial development activity — new community buildouts in the city's north and south, infrastructure projects like the Green Line LRT, commercial developments in University District and East Village, and ongoing industrial expansion — generates substantial demand for construction progress aerial documentation. We provide scheduled aerial surveys of construction projects, capturing site progress at weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly intervals to support project management, investor reporting, insurance documentation, and marketing materials.
Corporate & Commercial Aerial Photography
Energy companies with facilities spread across Calgary and the surrounding region, pipeline and infrastructure operators, industrial park developers, commercial real estate companies, and corporate campus managers all use aerial photography for facility documentation, marketing materials, investor presentations, and annual reports. Our industrial and commercial drone photography captures facility scale, operational context, and geographic setting in ways ground photography cannot achieve.
Event Aerial Photography
Calgary's major events — the Calgary Stampede grounds at its full July capacity, corporate golf tournaments at courses like Priddis Greens and Glencoe, charity runs and walks along the Bow River pathway, university convocation ceremonies, and large outdoor festivals — benefit from aerial photography that captures the scale of attendance and the festive atmosphere from above. We coordinate event drone operations with your event management team to ensure airspace compliance and seamless integration with your event photography coverage.
Tourism & Destination Photography
Calgary's tourism industry uses drone photography extensively — aerial shots of the city's distinctive skyline, the Bow River's path through downtown, Prince's Island Park's green space adjacent to towers, Fish Creek Provincial Park's vast urban wilderness, Heritage Park Historical Village, Nose Hill Park's prairie hilltop, and the mountain foothills visible from west Calgary. Tourism Calgary, hotels, and travel media rely on aerial photography to communicate Calgary's exceptional natural and urban character.
Mapping & Survey Photography
We provide systematic aerial mapping photography for land developers, engineering firms, municipal planning applications, and environmental assessment projects. Our mapping flights produce geo-referenced, overlapping image series suitable for orthomosaic processing and photogrammetry workflows.

Transport Canada Compliance in Calgary
Calgary's airspace is complex — Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Springbank Airport (YBW) create controlled airspace zones that cover much of the city. Operating commercially in Calgary's airspace without proper certification and NAVCAN authorization is illegal and carries significant fines. BOMCAS Media holds the Advanced RPAS Certificate required for controlled airspace operations, maintains current drone registration, carries commercial liability insurance, and files all required flight notifications with Nav Canada's NOTAM system. When you hire BOMCAS Media for Calgary drone photography, you receive fully compliant, insured aerial services.

Calgary Drone Photography FAQs
Downtown Calgary is within the controlled airspace of Calgary International Airport (YYC), requiring an Advanced RPAS Certificate and Nav Canada NOTAM authorization for any commercial drone operation. BOMCAS Media holds the Advanced RPAS Certificate and completes all required airspace authorizations before flying in controlled zones. We can legally and safely operate in downtown Calgary — operators without Advanced certification cannot.
Transport Canada regulations limit drones to 400 feet (120 meters) AGL in most areas, with lower ceilings in controlled airspace zones near YYC. We file the appropriate airspace authorizations for each shoot location. The altitude limits are sufficient to capture Calgary's skyline, foothills views, property context, and large-scale site photography effectively.
Springbank Airport creates another controlled airspace zone covering much of SW Calgary including Springbank, Aspen Woods, West Springs, Signal Hill, and Cougar Ridge. We hold the certification required for these operations and will file the required NAVCAN notification. Shoots in YBW-adjacent areas require advance planning — typically 24–48 hours for authorization.
Our primary drone platform is the DJI Mavic 3 Pro equipped with a Hasselblad L-Format camera featuring a 4/3-inch CMOS sensor. This produces 20MP still images with excellent dynamic range and colour accuracy — far superior to standard consumer drones. The Hasselblad sensor's performance in Calgary's varied light conditions (flat overcast, bright snow-reflected light, golden hour) delivers professional-grade results.
